Fly-tipping and bulk waste disposal

14 April 2025, updated 20 June 2025

We have noticed fly-tipping taking place in the North Kelvin area.

In some cases residents may have paid for a contractor to have waste disposed of properly, but if the contractor is unregistered and operating illegally the waste gets dumped.

If there is something in the waste which identifies who the owner was, the owner can be held responsible even if they acted in good faith in using the contractor.

Use a registered contractor

The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) advise:

All registered carriers should be able to provide you with their registration number. If they cannot, they may be moving your waste illegally. Check they are registered before you hire them.

You can use the SEPA website to check if a contractor is registered.

Help stop fly-tipping

Neighbourhoods, Regeneration and Sustainability (NRS) are working alongside partners in our area to investigate ongoing flytipping. They aim to identify anyone failing to dispose of bulk items, general waste, or food waste in the correct way. If you are identified as flytipping you may be fined £500, and it may also affect your tenancy agreement.
