NKCC health walk, 18 April
Our next walk is on Saturday, 18 April 2026. Destination: Woodside Viaducts. Meet as usual at 2pm.
Meeting point
Meet on Queen Margaret Bridge at the junction with Queen Margaret Road at 2pm, opposite our noticeboard.
About the walk
The route
Kelvin Walkway* to the Subway car park, then up the short section of West Prince’s St, across Park Road and then the full length of West Prince’s St to St George’s Road. We go up the ramp on the elevated section of Great Western Road.
Having crossed the M8, we turn right on to the footpath leading to Buccleuch St. We go down Buccleuch St, turn left into Rose St and left on to West Graham St where we cross at the lights and head down the footpath to New City Road.
We turn left and walk along past the former bank and through the underpass. We go through the grassed area to the houses, turn left and, at the end a right turn followed immediately by a left turn on to St Peter’s St.
We cross St Peter’s St on to Karol Path to St George’s Road. We cross into Glenfarg St, go round Woodside Halls to Clarendon St, left into Windsor Terrace and then right on to North Woodside Road.
We cross Maryhill Road and continue on N Woodside Road, cross Napiershall St into the small park and reach Mount St. We turn right and go up to Raeberry St, then left and go along to Striven Gardens, Doune Gardens, Doune Quadrant and finish back on Queen Margaret Road.
* On the Walkway, the penguins have some new non-penguin neighbours. The Flint Mill is undergoing works to strengthen and prevent further deterioration.
Background
The reason for going to the Viaducts is that their sudden deterioration required immediate action to prevent catastrophic collapse. The emergency repairs have gone on for three years and will continue until 2027. The repair work has meant major road diversions and changes to bus routes. The emergency repairs will stabilise the structures, but will not be a permanent solution.
There are three options, all costly and all requiring around 3 and up to 5 more years of work. The options are:
- Demolish and rebuild - this is the costliest option and will take 5 years
- Demolish and replace with a lower viaduct made of metal. This will take 3 to 4 years
- Remove the viaducts and restore the former street pattern. This is the cheapest option and will take 2 to 3 years.
This will affect all of us so it is important to consider the options and the implications.
