NKCC health walk 19 July

We will be walking to Maryhill Park via Dawsholm (the route out is mainly along the river).

group of walkers alongside the canal

Meeting point

Meet on Queen Margaret Bridge at the junction with Queen Margaret Road at 2pm, opposite our noticeboard.

About the walk

This is a longer walk, so there is an option after Maryhill Park to get the bus back along Maryhill Road if you would prefer not to do the full route, or to walk back along the canal if anyone wants a long walk.

The shorter walk (with a bus back)  is 5.07km/ 3.15 miles to the bus stop at Maryhill Road/ Duncruin St. You can also get the bus from Kern Street or the train from Maryhill station. The full route back to the start is 8.10km or 5.03 miles.

Access/safety

This is a longer route (in particular if we complete the full loop). There is a bit of a climb from the river to Maryhill Park.

The route mostly on surfaced footpaths with a couple of roads (a section of the full route is on Maryhill Road).

Please dress for the weather and you may wish to bring drinking water.

Full details of the route

From Queen Margaret Road, cross Queen Margaret Road and along Kelvin Drive and then down to the river at the ramped path before you get to Kirklee Bridge.

Along the river walkway, taking the path over the Ha'penny bridge into the arboretum. Crossing the river at the footbridge and walking up past the site where the Wyndford flats previously stood. Crossing Kelvindale Road and continuing along the walkway. Continuing along the walkway to Dalsholm Road where we will walk up to Maryhill Road. Crossing the road and entering Maryhill Park. Looping along the main path to the back of the tennis courts (where we can look at the courts and the community garden) before exiting onto Spence Street, Crosbie Street, Caldercuilt Road, Maryhill Road.

Option to return by public transport

The nearest transport is Maryhill train station. There is a bus stop at Kern Street (slightly back towards the Park) or one at Duncruin Street which appears to have the most bus options (this is where the short route is measured to). The 60 and 61 buses go to Bilsland Drive at Maryhill Road (approx 500m from the start point).

Option to return on foot

If you prefer to walk back to the start we will walk along Maryhill Road, cross the road at the lights at Cowal Road, then cross the canal at the bridge after the locks. Walking back along the canal under Ruchill Street, and then down Shakespeare Street, Garioch Road, Clouston Street, Queen Margaret Drive.

To shorten the full route its is also possible to come off the canal behind Glasgow Club Maryhill and join Maryhill Road back to Shakespeare Street which cuts the full route to 7.56/4.7 miles.
