NKCC health walk 21 June
For our walk on Saturday 21 June we're exploring our own local area, walking up the hill to St Charles’ Oratory, looping behind the fire station before walking along the canal to Murano Street and up to Ruchill Park before returning to the start via Bilsland Drive.
Meeting point
Meet on Queen Margaret Bridge at the junction with Queen Margaret Road at 2pm, opposite our noticeboard.
About the walk
This walk is shorter than usual (4.30km or 2.67 miles) but does include some hills.
Access/safety
This path does have a few steps up to the canal at Murano Street.
In Ruchill Park we had planned to take the path through the wooded area. This is slightly overgrown and at points is unsurfaced/poorly surfaced, so may not be suitable for all. If preferred, an alternative route would be to stick to the main path along the brow of the hill past the play park and descend a few steps by the sports grounds.
Full details of the route
From Queen Margaret Road, to Wilton Street, Kelvinside Gardens, Kelvinside Gardens East to St Charles’.
Kelvinside Gardens East, Kelvinside Drive, Oban Passage (behind the Fire Station), to Maryhill Road, cross at the lights and climb to the canal tow path. Along the tow path to Firhill Road, Murano Street, to the main entrance of Ruchill Park.
Inside the Park we will walk up the path to the viewpoint (optional, if you’d prefer to avoid the climb), then down the viewpoint again, joining the main path past the pampas grass (on the right) and playground (on the left).
We then have 3 choices - we will see what everyone would like on the day:
- Slightly overgrown tarmac/unsurfaced path. Take the fork into the woody area, cutting through this area diagonally before descending to the main path around the park to Bilsland Drive.
- Main surfaced path (avoiding the wooded area): There is an alternative route sticking to the main path along the brow of the hill in the Park and down the steps by the sports pitches before descending to Bilsland Drive.
- Unsurfaced path: There is an alternative route through the wooded area along the unsurfaced path to the trees beside the pitches. This is a pretty route but only suitable when it’s not muddy and if everyone is happy to step over tree roots to return to the main path.
For all 3 options: rejoin the main path as it loops towards Bilsland Drive, join Bilsland Drive and walk down the road. Cross Maryhill Road and walk down Queen Margaret Drive to the start point.
