Doors Open Day Festival, 12-18 Sept 2016
There are several local events in this year’s Doors Open Day festival celebrating Glasgow’s architecture and heritage. Right at the heart of North Kelvin is:
St Charles RC Church, Kelvinside Gardens, open Saturday 17th September, 10a.m.–4p.m.
St Charles RC is a Modernist building by Architects Gillespie, Kidd and Coia with outstanding Stations of the Cross by Glasgow sculptor Benno Schotz. Silver dove sculpted in aluminium by Walter Pritchard and etching on the glass doors by Avril Gibb. Externally there is an 80-foot tower with a striking cross, featuring the sun and the moon, designed by architect Andy MacMillan.
Other nearby buildings in the Doors Open Day programme include the Mackintosh Church, East Park and Maryhill Burgh Halls, and there will be a guided walk visiting bridges of the River Kelvin.
All events are free. Please see the Doors Open Day website for more info or download the full programme.
