NKCC health walk, 21 March

Our next walk, on Saturday, 21 March 2026, will go to the viewpoint in the Claypits.

Meeting point

Meet on Queen Margaret Bridge at the junction with Queen Margaret Road at 2pm, opposite our noticeboard.

About the walk

Route

Queen Margaret Road, Doune Quadrant, Doune Gardens, Striven Gardens, Raebrry St, Trossachs St to Garscube Road.

We cross Garscube Road and use the zigzag path (or steps) to reach the canal towpath. On the towpath we turn right until we reach the footbridge at the top of Baird’s Brae opposite the Scottish Canals HQ.

We cross the bridge and go past the statue of an elephant and on to Applecross St. We go to the top of Applecross St and turn left into Ellesmere St.

At the top, we turn left into the top entrance to the Claypits and make our way down to the Viewpoint. After the Viewpoint, we retrace our steps for a short distance then turn left and go downhill to the towpath.

At the towpath we turn right and eventually reach the boardwalk which passes a natural marsh which is a Site of Soecial Scientific Interest.

At the end of the boardwalk we continue straight ahead following the section of the canal that runs alongside the Timber Basin.

This takes us to Firhill Road. We go downhill and at the student hall of residence we turn left, go under the Nollie Brig on to the towpath and walk along to the footbridge opposite Maryhill Fire Station.

We cross Maryhill Road and go between the Fire Station and the Fire House pub to the bollards adjacent to the roundabout, turn right into Kelvinside Avenue and go down to Queen Margaret Drive.

Although the Viewpoint is at a high point, the route is a gradual ascent.

Registration

There is no need to book – you can just come along on the day.

Remember…

★ Please wear comfortable shoes

★ Dress for the weather and consider bringing drinking water

★ Walkers needing 1:1 support should bring a buddy with them to help

★ Children must be accompanied by an adult
