NKCC health walk, 22 Aug

Our next walk is on Saturday 22 August 2026 and will go to the Calton Burial Ground in Abercromby Street in Calton. The residents of Calton were mainly weavers and the burial ground was established in the 18th century. It is no longer used for burials but is open to the public. It was refurbished some years ago by Glasgow City Council and contains a number of new explanatory panels. It has a monument to the weavers.

Meet on Queen Margaret Bridge at the junction with Queen Margaret Road at 2pm, opposite our noticeboard.

About the walk

This walk is one way, as it is too long to do both ways. One way is 4 miles.

We can get 60 or 61 buses back from Gallowgate to Maryhill Road. Some may prefer to change buses in the City Centre for services nearer to home or switch to the Subway. Bellgrove Station, which has regular train services to Partick and Hyndland, is near Gallowgate.

The route in detail

The first part of the route is well trodden to Cowcaddens Subway – QM Road, Doune Quadrant, Doune Gardens, Striven Gardens, Garriochmill Way, North Woodside Road, Maryhill Road to St George’s Cross and New City Road to Cowcaddens Subway.

After the Subway, we take a new path up to the new Avenue on Cowcaddens Road, with the luxuriant rain gardens. This wide footway goes past the Caledonian University to North Frederick St. There are roadworks there, but there is still pedestrian access.

We turn right (towards George Square, but not as far as there) and enter Townhead (or ‘Toonheid’ as it is usually called) at St Mungo Avenue which is adjacent to North Frederick St.

We follow St Mungo Avenue as it swings left then turn right into Grafton Place which we follow uphill past a multistorey block and enter the relatively new Allan Glen’s Park, which has a statue of the City’s patron saint.

We descend to Cathedral St and turn left. We cross and enter part of the campus of Strathclyde University and go through the grounds to Collins St, which we cross and continue straight ahead to Castle St at Provand’s Lordship, with the Cathedral and St Mungo Museum across the street.

We cross and go down John Knox St to Duke St past Tenant’s Brewery. We turn left along Duke St until we reach Melbourne St. We turn right and follow the street to reach Gallowgate, which we cross.

We take a footpath into a housing development and wend our way south to Green St, where after a short way we turn left through a playground to Tobago St. Then we go right and then left along Stevenson St, which brings us to Abercromby St.

We turn right and ahead is a gable with a striking mural of St Thenue. The entry to the burial ground is on the left at a bend in Abercromby St.

After visiting the burial ground we make our way back up Abercromby St to Gallowgate and our buses.

There is no need to book – you can just come along on the day.
