About the walk
The walk is 5.8 km (3.6 miles), about 1½ hours or so.
The route in detail
We cross QMD and walk along to the end of Clouston St. After a brief stop, we go through North Kelvin Meadow to Kelbourne St. We turn left, then right into Northumberland St, then left into Hotspur St and go to the right along Garrioch Road and enter Wyndford.
We follow the winding Glenfinnan Road until it emerges on Kelvindale Road. We cross and go left then turn right into Balfour St (alongside Maryhill Health Centre) and go to the top end, where we bear left and join a footpath alongside a block of flats. We bear left on the footpath to meet Guthrie St/Collina St.
We follow Collina St past flats on the right-hand side, and a short distance after the flats we turn right on to a footpath, which brings us to the canal towpath at the highest of Maryhill Locks. We turn left and at the next lock we cross it on top of the lock gate and bear left, following the path which comes out on to Bataskin St.
We go the short distance to Cowal Road, turn right towards Maryhill Road and cross Cowal Road at the traffic lights. We continue along Maryhill Road for a short distance and cross at the pedestrian crossing. We head left, still on Maryhill Road, pass the end of Duncruin St and then St Mary's Primary School, where we turn right into Kilmaun St.
We continue on Kilmun St until it meets Sandbank St and turn right along Sandbank St. We continue on Sandbank St, past the Lomond House takeaway to the junction with Thornton St. We turn left along Thornton St to its junction with Cottar St, where we turn left and continue the short distance to Glenburn St.
We go halfway along Glenburn St then turn around and return to Cottar St, where we turn left and continue down Cottar Street to its junction with Campbell St, which we cross and turn left. After a short distance we turn right on to a footpath, and about halfway down we turn left on to the canal towpath.
We turn left towards Stockingfield Bridge and ascend the set of steps on to the bridge and continue to the Maryhill side of the bridge. Coming down off the bridge we continue straight ahead towards the Ruchill St Bridge. We go under the bridge and turn right on to Shakespeare St, past the former parish church.
We cross Maryhill Road at the Viking pub and continue for a very short distance down Shakespeare St and turn first left into Hathaway Lane. At the end we turn right into Avenuepark St, cross and turn into the path just before Maryhill Community Centre.
When the path opens out, we bear right and follow the path past the end of the house, then left and continue to Oran Gardens. We turn right then very soon after, turn left on to Oran St, which continues in a sweeping curve around a green space and then turns left towards Hotspur St. We turn left along Hotspur St, right into Mingarry St, first left into Kelbourne St and on to QMD. We turn right and go to the pedestrian crossing, cross and turn right and continue to Queen Margaret Bridge.
