NKCC health walk 30 August

Our walk on Saturday 30th will be to the new housing around the Water Tower at the former Ruchill Hospital site.

Meeting point

Meet on Queen Margaret Bridge at the junction with Queen Margaret Road at 2pm, opposite our noticeboard.

About the walk

The walk is 7km (approx 4.5 miles).

Route in detail

We will go along Queen Margaret Road, Doune Quadrant, Doune Gardens, Raeberry St, across Maryhill Road to Trossachs St and north to Garscube Road, from where we will take the Zigzag Path to the canal.

We cross the footbridge into the Claypits and follow the path directly ahead and uphill. When we reach a junction we go straight ahead and follow the path past the children's playpark and enter Hamiltonhill at Westercommon Drive.

We follow this to its end at Panmure St, then turn right for a very short distance until we are opposite McDonald Drive, which is the route into one of the two housing sites. There is no formal crossing here. We will follow the fence line and leave the site by the route by which we entered.

Back on Panmure St, we turn left and after about 50 metres there is a footpath called 'The Dummy Railway'. The Council has plans to develop this into a wider and better path, but, at present, it is slightly rough and has a short flight of steps. On the left is a high brick wall which separated the hospital from the Dummy Railway.

The path continues to Bilsland Drive, where we turn left and after about 150 metres go up a long flight of steps into the other site. At the top of the steps is a road leading directly to the Water Tower. We can walk around the periphery and will reach a road which leads back down to Bilsland Drive.

We go left for a short distance and enter Ruchill Park. We follow the path in the Park which is parallel to Bilsland Drive and leave the Park at a gate near the junction with Murano St. We continue down Bilsland Drive, under the canal aqueduct and reach Maryhill Road. We cross Maryhill Road and go down Queen Margaret Drive to reach the end of our walk at the bridge.

There is no need to book – you can just come along on the day.

Remember…

★ Please wear comfortable shoes

★ Dress for the weather and consider bringing drinking water

★ Walkers needing 1:1 support should bring a buddy with them to help

★ Children must be accompanied by an adult
