Update on Queen Margaret Road and Kelvinside Terrace South

Proposed permanent closure of Queen Margaret Road

Councillor Wardrop is seeking residents’ feedback on the recent briefing note produced by the City Council on Queen Margaret Road/Kelvinside Terrace South.

Details of how to comment are below. Closing date for comments is 3rd September 2024. You can download the briefing note and a list of frequently asked questions (produced by the Council in response to residents’ comments) from the links at the bottom of this page.

Background

Glasgow City Council closed a section of road at Queen Margaret Road/Kelvinside Terrace South in September 2022 because of concerns about subsidence.

Since then, their surveys and assessments have confirmed that the 60 Steps Retaining Wall and neighbouring properties remain safe, but the side of the road beside the Kelvin is no longer considered suitable for vehicles and is only capable of supporting light traffic such as pedestrians or cyclists. The side of the road beside the 60 Steps retaining wall remains safe for use by vehicular traffic but will no longer be accessible by car.

What the Council proposes

The Council proposes to install a lockable gate to one side of the area of road that is currently closed so that the road surface, drainage, street lighting and public utilities can all be maintained. The other side will be permanently shut (see picture below).

The area will still be accessible on foot and by cycle.

The parking bays currently sited along the north side of Kelvinside Terrace South, in front of the tenement flats, will be relocated to the south side of the road and access to Doune Quadrant will only be possible via the ramp at Kelvinside Terrace South.

Approximately 9 parking spaces will be permanently removed.
