Firework Control Zone application for Firhill Basin

22 June 2026

A group of local residents applied for a Firework Control Zone (FCZ) in the Firhill Basin in March this year. Their application to Glasgow City Council was unsuccessful and so they are submitting an appeal.

As part of the appeal they are looking for local support and asking residents to fill in a survey before 8 July 2026 indicating their opinion on the proposed FCZ in the Firhill Basin area. The survey has been produced by North West Glasgow Residents Against Anti-Social Fireworks.

The application includes the Firhill Basin, Panmure Wharf, Panmure Gate, some of Panmure Street and Firhill Road and a portion of the Claypits Nature Reserve.

The proposed FCZ would be effective from 30 October until 10 November.

Areas of concern in North Kelvin

Problem areas in NK include behind Firhill Stadium and beside the student accommodation on Firhill Road, including the canal banks and wharfs, and the area running up from the stadium up to and including Garscube Bridge. Fireworks ignited in these areas have a direct effect on local residents.

Key issues

There are several key issues including:

  • noise disturbance (personal wellbeing of residents and their pets)
  • environmental concerns (litter and debris left behind; the effect on wildlife within the Nature Reserve)
  • safety concerns (fireworks being ignited in public space, in close proximity to trees and buildings)
  • property damage (danger from fallout and proximity to cars and outbuildings)

Support for the FCZ

Members of North Kelvin Community Council have agreed to support the appeal for fireworks control in the Firhill Basin and Claypits area.

If you would like to give your opinion on the proposed FCZ, please fill in the survey before 8 July.
